Thankful

I’ve got a lot to catch up on, but I’ve been keeping a running list, so here we go…

  • Saturday was a lazy day. I am thankful for friends who don’t care that most of us sat in our pajamas for more hours than I can recall. Really…what’s better than four of your best friends in the same room, lounging around, doing a lot of nothing and eating a lot of junk food? It’s great and it only happens like this once a year. Friends + pajamas + junk food + laughter = me being thankful.
  • Friday after work I met up with Katie to head to our 6th Annual Chanda Weekend. That night I was so grateful for friends who know me and love me just the same. My friend Shanel was telling us how she explained to her husband what each of us are like when we first arrive. She had everyone (and our personalities) down to a tee. All my friends know that when I first arrive to this cherished weekend, I am quiet, reserved and a little overwhelmed taking it all in. I love each of these girls dearly, it just takes me a little bit to warm up. Not sure why…it’s just the way I am. And, I’m grateful that my friends know that about me and love me just the same.
  • On Thursday night I started a new class-Work Motivation. After having a week off (the first Thursday night off since January), it was a little bit hard to get back into the swing of things and I was thankful when our professor decided to let us out of class a little early. His reasoning was so that we could go watch Barack’s speech, which I wasn’t really planning on doing. However, it was Chad‘s last night in PBG, so it was great that I could go hang out with him before he left. So, Dr. Shields, thanks for letting us out of class early!
  • On Wednesday, I had to choose to be thankful for the luxury of air conditioning. Our A/C has been a point of contention since we moved in and after more than two weeks of complaining about it, I decided it could be worse and I needed to be grateful. Having something that cools (or freezes) your house off is certainly a luxury and not something that everyone is blessed with. It’s one of those things you notice only when it doesn’t work the way you want it to or when it breaks. Even though our A/C doesn’t work the way I’d like, I am grateful that we have air conditioning.
  • Life gets busy (can anyone relate?) and on Tuesday night, I was very thankful for a night at home. I didn’t have any particular plans, but I just spent a nice night at home relaxing and getting things done. It was a nice night at home and I was grateful for that.
  • Monday at work involved a lot of meetings and team time. In an economy like our country’s at the moment, I am thankful for a job. I have a great team of people to work with, a few of whom are close friends of mine. My job makes a difference and serves a purpose much greater than myself. With several of my friends without jobs right now, I am thankful for my job.
  • I have been in and out of town on the weekends a lot in the last couple of months. That makes being a regular church attender a little difficult. I hadn’t been to The Ascent in a couple of weeks, so on Sunday of last week I was thankful for an incredible church body with amazing leadership who love the Lord and do their best to strive to please Him.
  • So last Saturday, I went to Ikea in search of a desk. Chad and Emily accompanied me. I get very overwhelmed with decorating or arranging a room. There are just far too many options. My trip to Ikea made me grateful for people with talents and gifts other than my own. Chadwick has quite the eye and just knows what looks good. I stopped making suggestions after the faces he made. I just let him do his thing. He picked out a great lampshade for my room and also some awesome pictures and frames for my bathroom. Surrounding yourself with people who have different strengths and abilities is a smart thing to do in any area of life. And, I am thankful for friends with talents and gifts that are different than mine.

Random Thoughts…

For some reason I’ve been thinking about this for the last couple of days: “What would be other ministries I would love to work for, regardless of location?” Don’t get me wrong–

I AM NOT PLANNING ON MOVING

and

I AM NOT LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB.

It’s just something that’s been running around in my head as I listen to podcasts and read blogs of some of my favorite pastors around the country. I had the amazing opportunity to work for one of America’s great churches for more than six years, and God recently blessed me to be part of the team at an incredible non-profit ministry. I just sometimes wonder what it would be like to work with/for some of these ministries that I follow from afar.

Here’s my running list of ministries I think it would be neat to be a part of (in no particular order):

  1. Catalyst ~ I can’t even imagine being in a brainstorming session with that team. Good grief, I think it would blow my mind.
  2. Passion ~ Louie Giglio is one of my all-time favorite speakers. He seems like a visionary and dreamer and I think it would be neat to be a part of something so groundbreaking.
  3. NCC & Mark Batterson ~ I just love reading this guy’s blog and books. I absolutely LOVE his ideas about the church and creativity.
  4. The Village Church & Matt Chandler ~ Just from listening to his podcasts for more than a year now, I think it would be amazing to be part of the journey that Matt Chandler is leading his church on. It’s so authentic and down to earth.
  5. Northpoint & Andy Stanley ~ What another amazing leader in the church! And, another church who pushes the envelope of creativity. I imagine it would be tons of fun.
I know no place is perfect, so I’m sure each of these organizations and leaders have their strengths and weaknesses.
And, again, this is not a “sign” that I am not happy with my job…that has NOTHING to do with it, so stop trying to start the rumor mill right now. I love my job and I have no intention of leaving.
I just thought I’d share my thoughts and ask you…

My friend Katie tagged all of her readers to say what their “typical day” looks like. I feel like my typical days are kind of boring, but here we go…

6:30am (ish): Alarm goes off. Press snooze.

6:39am: Hit snooze again.

6:48am: Hit snooze again.

[do you catch the pattern here?]

7:00-7:15am: Actually turn alarm off and get out of bed…normally annoyed with myself for not getting up earlier [this happens every day, so I have started leaving my blinds open a little at night so that in the morning the sun shines in to help me wake up]

7:55am: Leave for work

8:00am: Get to work, say hello, grab coffee, get settled for the day

8:00am-5:00pm: Work…meetings, projects, phone calls, emails, lunch, running around

Evenings: each night is different, but when possible I like to exercise, make dinner and hang out at home; every Wednesday night I have small group and every Thursday night I have class at PBA; during the “school year” I have Bible study on Monday nights.

There you have it…boring, right?

An Update to a Previous Post…I like to keep track of the books I read so that I can look back and see what I’ve read over the year. I will attempt to keep this list up to date and offer quick synopses for each. I’ve got quite a stack to get through right now, but feel free to comment back with other reading suggestions. )

Prince Caspian (C.S. Lewis): This is a great book! Honestly, I think I liked it better than The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe! I’m excited to see the book “come to life” in the movie.

Looking For God (Nancy Ortberg): This was a quick read, but not necessarily my favorite. I started it last Thursday and finished it Sunday. At times it was hard to follow and I felt like the author jumped back and forth between stories and points from chapter to chapter.

A Practical Guide to Needs Assessment (Kavita Gupta): Still working on this one. Required for school. Doesn’t the author’s name make you at least raise your eyebrows? I haven’t gotten too far into this one yet, but it’s another textbook for school. Talks about closing the gap between where your organization is currently and where you’d like to be (gap between reality and vision).

Improving Performance (Geary Rummler & Alan Branche): Still working on this one. Required for school. Another textbook for school and one thing I like about it already is the SHORT chapters! 🙂 

Organization Development (Joan Gallos): Required for school. Call me a dork, but this is one textbook that I am really liking. If you care at all about why organizations function the way they do, then you may enjoy it too. It’s a HUGE book with tons of chapters, but for those of us interested in organizations and leadership, there’s a chapter for everybody.

Celebration of Discipline (Richard Foster): This is a great, easy to read book about spiritual disciplines that should be at work in each Christian’s life.

Ethics, The Heart of Leadership (Joanne Cuilla): Required for school. Gave up on this one. Quite frankly I didn’t enjoyed this one. Good if you really like textbooks, need quick leadership related quotes for a paper or enjoy trying to read around a million different footnotes and citations. Otherwise, you could find a more interesting read.

Crossing the Unknown Sea: Work as a Pilgrimage of Identity (David Whyte): Required for school. Although I’m unsure if the author is a Christian, the tale of his journey through several careers is transparent, genuine and compelling. I like it because it challenges the way I think about work and life. Good stuff.

Jesus in Blue Jeans (Laurie Beth Jones): Still working on this one. A great book with short devos about how Jesus lived His life that provide thought provoking questions.

The Starbucks Experience (Joseph Michelli): Quick read and very insightful book on why our favorite coffee destination has experienced the success they have. If you are a leader or interested in successful organizations this book has great practical applications.

Cinco Things

This is not on my list of things to blog about in the previous post, but Katie’s wish is my command…

What was I doing 10 years ago (spring of 1998): 1) finally adjusting to life at Palm Beach Atlantic and deciding it was ok to stay for three more years; 2) skipping class in favor of the the beach; 3) I think I also had a babysitting job that I wasn’t crazy about, but I felt really bad for the little girl’s situation so I stayed 4) not realizing how good I had it while in college (hello real world, 10 years later); 5) learning how right my parents were all the time and beginning to understand and appreciate their wisdom.

Five things on my to-do list: 1) see previous blog post; 2) beg itunes to let me redownload my music after my hard drive crashed; 3) unpack, unpack some more, settle in; 4) homework; 5) pay the balance of my school bill

Five snacks I enjoy: 1) frivolous ones; 2) chocolate; 3) chocolate; 4) chocolate; 5) chocolate

Five things I would do if I were a billionaire: 1) give lots away; 2) pay off family debts; 3) save; 4) who am i kidding?!!?  SHOP, of course; 5) travel…lots…with people i love

Five of my bad habits: 1) not exercising enough; 2) getting annoyed when people don’t meet whatever expectations i made up for them in my head; 3) i’m on the computer way too much; 4) my mom would say that i pour a glass of whatever i want to drink and then don’t drink it all and then she has to pick it up afer me; 5) not putting away clean clothes…i HATE doing that

If you care at all about why organizations function the way they do, then you may enjoy it too. It’s a HUGE book with tons of chapters, but for those of us interested in organizations and leadership, there’s a chapter for everybody.

Celebration of Discipline (Richard Foster): Still working on this one. This is a great, easy to read book about spiritual disciplines that should be at work in each Christian’s life. He Saw Himself as the Host

This is going to be a tad long, but I like it and think it’s worth sharing. This is a little devo from Jesus In Blue Jeans (Laurie Beth Jones).

He Saw Himself as the Host

When Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana, an event at which he was a guest, he actually took on the duties of the host. This deed, I believe, eloquently conveyed his attitude toward the world. “He came not to be served, but to serve.” -John 2:1

When I started my business, I began the task of networking as if the life of the company depended on it. In fact, it did because I had no money for advertising. The only way I coudl let people know about the service I provided was to show up in person and tell them. A colleague gave me very wise advice about how to take the discomfort out of the many networking parties I attended. She said, “Act as if you’re the hose at the party, rather than the guest.”

I tried it both ways. I went to one party and acted like the guest (since that was the much easier assignment). I waited for someone to come up to me and ask me who I was and whether I had enough to eat and whether the temperature of the room was okay with me and if the music was too loud, etc. That night I met two people.

The next week I took the other approach. I pretended that the party was actually my own and made sure to reach out to people who looked a little nervous and do what I could to introduce them to others (even though I knew no one there myself). The results were astoundingly different. I came home with twenty business cards from different people whom I had actually connected with–because I had treated them as my guests. Acting like the host led me to reach out to more people. It put me in a proactive, rather than reactive, stance.

My niece Tara (who was born a redhead) doesn’t have a shy bone in her body. When my sister took her to school for the first time she told her, “Tara, try to make at least one new friend today.” When Kathy picked her up that afternoon, Tara practically leaped into the car. “I made six friends today, Mommy!” she smiled. When Kathy asked her how she had done that, the six-year-old answered, “Well, I just looked around the playground at all the kids and said to myself, ‘I’ll just pretend that this is my birthday party, and “Let ‘er rip!”‘”

I recently stayed at the Philadelphia Airport Marriot. Being a frequent traveler, I am used to varying degrees of service. What impressed me about this place was how courteous and friendly everyone was to me–from the clerk at the check in desk to the bellman who helped me with my luggage to the person who delivered room service to the person who took my messages. Finally, as I was leaving, I turned to the shuttle driver and said, “Why do I feel so cared about here? This place has been wonderful!” He smiled and said, “Well, Ms. Jones, the way I see it, when you’re here, you are my guest, and I want to do everything in my power to make sure you feel like this is your second home. I guess everyone else who works here feels the same way.”

In the book The Aladdin Factor, authors Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hanson have developed a formula to use as an aid for extending yourself. They use the intials SWSWSWSW, which stands for “Some Will, Some Won’t, So What, Someone’s Waiting.” This acronym is an excellent encouragement for putting yourself out to others in new and perhaps challenging ways. Some will receive you. Some won’t. So what? Someone’s waiting.

Jesus knew that not everybody would want to come to his party. Nevertheless, he was concerned about the ones who would accept his invitation. He wasn’t there to be invited–he was there to invite.

He saw himself as the host.

Words to Live By

Well, tomorrow I am beginning a new job. I’m excited about it. And, as I was thinking about it tonight, I decided to read over some personal definitions I had to write as part of the application process for my new job. I was given a list of twelve words and asked to write what each of them mean to me, in my own words.

I want to remember these, not just as it relates to my work, but also to my life. Thought I’d share them with whomever is reading this as well…maybe just myself. 🙂

  1. Loyalty: the commitment to stand by, support and protect those around you (ie: family, friends, coworkers) by being faithful to the relationships you have worked so hard to develop
  2. Commitment: an unwavering dedication to a cause or person which requires the utmost personal engagement in, and adoption of, the ideas, values and beliefs of the organization, cause or individual
  3. Flexibility: the willingness to “change gears” and adjust plans when appropriate or when deemed to be in the best interest of the team and others involved
  4. Perseverance: an attitude that will not give up even when circumstances or situations are not ideal while trusting in God for the strength needed to endure
  5. Courage: continuing to walk forward in faith even in the midst of fear or difficulty
  6. Responsibility: the acknowledgement of one’s accountability to personal tasks and commitments; the idea that an individual must successfully complete his or her tasks in order for other team members to successfully remain accountable to their personal tasks and commitments
  7. Conviction: a strong belief that will not be moved when influenced by outside ideas, circumstances or situations, a firm planting in personal faith and belief
  8. Authority: put in place by God in all arenas of life to provide guidance, wisdom, leadership and accountability
  9. Self-Motivating: the ability to harness personal vision, creativity and direction in order to move from thought to action without constant guidance from others
  10. Full-time Ministry: the attitude that assumes God calls each of us to a certain career and place of employment and that He will provide opportunities to care for others on a daily basis no matter what field we find ourselves in; this type of care should not take place only in the church setting
  11. Honesty: a personal commitment to always live in the truth and speak the truth in love
  12. Integrity: living a life rooted in, and guided by, personal convictions, beliefs and morals
