28 Layers of Cake: via the iPhone

So…you may remember my first attempt at the 14-layer cake a while back. Things went mostly as planned and there were no major catastrophes. Because she knew it was possible, when it came time for Kasey’s birthday last year (2009), she asked for the 14-layer cake. As fate would have it, I somehow ended up getting 15 layers out of the batter.

Of course, when talk of Kasey’s birthday celebration for this year started, there was no question in her mind that she needed a 16-layer cake. I decided I had to try and make it happen. My recipe makes 14 (or if you’re lucky 15) layers of cake, so I knew doubling the recipe would be required. Being that my Mom’s birthday is a few days before Kasey’s, I decided to use the other layers to surprise my Mom!

I began to mentally prepare for this feat a few days before the actual baking started. And, because I thought it would be fun, I documented my progress with my iPhone and Facebook.

So, here you have it…28 Layers of Cake: via the iPhone.

You certainly have a lot of layers going on!!

I make a lot of layered cakes too, but instead of baking them all separately, I bake several normal size cakes and use my cake leveler to cut them into smaller layers, as many as you need. The bonus is that all the layers turn out equal in size and perfectly flat.

I have wondered how a cake leveler would work. But for cakes this thin, I’m not sure. Maybe something to try someday…? πŸ™‚

Kasey has already asked for 17 layers next year. That might be pushing it, so I’m not so sure we should go for any world records. πŸ™‚
